En dag i september dør Matthias’ far i en faldulykke i Nysted på Lolland. Blandt hans efterladenskaber findes et manuskript, der opruller en fortiet familiehistorie om nazisme, modstand og borgerlig dekadence. Da onkler og tanter dukker op fra øst og vest for at deltage i bisættelsen, hvirvles fortiden op og spørgsmålet melder sig: Hvem var faren egentlig?
