History

Welcome to Nysted – a charming town with a long history.

Nysted is located by Nysted Nor, which was formed in the last ice age as a so-called tunnel valley. While the rest of Lolland is flat, the landscape to the northwest, in a band above the island, is quite hilly, just as you see it in Nysted. The towns of Lolland and Falster are believed to have arisen around the 13th century, and from then on Nysted was the center of the king's administration of eastern Lolland, where Ålholm fief and Musse herred were ruled from Nysted. In fact, Nysted had its heyday until the middle of the 17th century, when only Nakskov on Lolland and Falster were bigger than Nysted. Since then, Nysted has been overtaken by several other cities in size, but Nysted has retained its historic charm with small half-timbered houses and winding streets and a cozy atmosphere.
